DEAR PHILADELPHIA FRIENDS (AND HEATHER!):

You guys all have the best friendships I’ve ever seen. You’re all absolutely insane, but that’s why I love you. I never ever have a bad time when I’m around any of you guys, be it one or all of you. Meeting and hanging out with all of you this summer, especially at Warped was glorious, and I want to thank all of you for letting me sleep at your house or ride in your car at one point or another. I’m so happy you all are in my life, and wish it was more often. I hope you all know exactly who you are, and thanks for making Philadelphia my second favorite city.

Products Targeted Toward Hipsters

A few weeks ago, there was a rather sizable kerfluffle over Miracle Whip, a commercial for which featured attractive, frolicking hipster-esque people having some kind of celebration in honor of the condiment. Stephen Colbert got in on the game as did Look At This Fucking Hipster. And from camp hipster? Fucking crickets. There are myriad reasons for this lack of interest/derision.

1). Hipsters don’t have functioning TVs, so it’s highly likely that no one saw the commercial in question.

2). Hipsters most likely don’t know what Miracle Whip is. Who the hell actually assembles traditional sandwiches complete with deli meats and mysterious condiments? That involves way too much work and far too many steps.

3). Hipsters are not beguiled by advertising or products aimed toward their demographic, because they refuse to accept that they fit said demographic. No, the average hipster often gravitates toward goods and services better suited to other cultures and countercultures. Take, for example, Four Loko—a disgustingly amazing caffeinated liquor that gets one seriously fucked up within minutes (yeah, it’s probably going to be illegal soon…). Despite the fact that this beverage was clearly created for hip-hop fanboys or something of the like, hipsters chug this shit like manna from the Gods. Why? Did I mention that it gets you seriously fucked up?

In short, if the folks over at Miracle Whip really want to draw the younger crowd into their world of mayo-y goodness, they should hawk their wares at ghetto-ass bodegas slathered on pre-made sandwiches that are soaked in booze and marketed toward rappers. Mmm, a good source of irony.

I love my major & crappy marketing tactics!

Started writing a long blog entry then realized the topics changed completely with each paragraph, thus making it inappropriate for my formal blog, and more appropriate for my tumblr on a paragraph by paragraph basis:

On the other hand, while I love my friends and the people I surround myself with, my deepest wish (possibly greater than taking over the world), is to have a boy in my life that I can spend time with and cuddle. While I never see myself getting married—because A.) marriage is useless (except for tax breaks), B.) I couldn’t imagine anyone would want to be around me in such a permanent fashion, and C.) the only thing domesticated life and suburbs are good for are throwing parties—I just want a rowhome in the city with a boy that calls occasionally, and hugs me like he hasn’t seen me in years. One that will see movies with me, and go to the farm and pick apples, and other stupidly cute things. One that doesn’t like playing games but likes having a crazy life so he has something comfortable to come home to. I just need a boy that thinks I’m cute for simply being myself. Over the crazy six weeks, there was a very unexpected boy that held my hand, and cuddled with me. While we weren’t together the whole time, we always ended up coming back to each other. He thought everything I did, wore or said was cute. I did nothing but make stupid jokes, make fun of people, and dance around the room. I need more of that in my life—people I don’t feel like I have to impress. People I can be myself around.

Be funny “He’s licking the glass and making obscene gestures with his hands.” simple as that.

Be confident Look, one of the reasons Ferris loved her was because she was cool and classy lady, she didn’t stress. She uttered the words and believed “He’s gonna marry me.” She probably knows if her boyfriend was running through a backyard and saw 2 girls tanning he probably would stop and say hello, but she also knows that he would spend hours of stress and risk his neck to get her out of school to just see her. Relax. You have him. He’s not going anywhere, and if he talks to other girls who the fuck cares YOU are the one he wants to marry.

Say Eloquent Shit did Sloane ever use the word “like” as much as you do in your daily conversation? No. Drop the habit that makes you seem like a dumb valley girl and trade it for stellar vocab terms like “warmth & compassion” and “devastatingly handsome.” Once you’ve mastered talking like an adult, you’ll be able to spew pearls of poetry like “The city looks so peaceful from up here…”

Pack lightly ever notice how tiny Sloane’s purse was? The bigger the purse, the lamer the girl. Its called baggage for a reason.

Be able to keep up with the boys Hey, if you’ve got cramps, take a fucking midol and strap in. You don’t ever wanna be the girlfriend who is a drag and never wants to go out. A girl who can say she cruised with the top down in a convertible, swung by the Stock Exchange, and took in a Cubs game all in one day, is sorta girl who you wanna keep around.

I believe that slowly, I am on my way to being the girl I want to be. There’s a lot I have to change about myself, but I’m working hard to be where I want to be. I spent the last six weeks hanging out with genuine friends, people I wouldn’t have dreamed of hanging out with when I was 14 years old. I slept on a lot of couches, and a few hotel rooms, and half the time, we weren’t raging, we were just sitting and talking, flipping through Japanese magazine and listening to playlists I created in our pajamas. I always need to be reminded that people like me, and getting texts asking where I am from people who introduce me with enthusiasm by name to their friends is a great reminder. I was more surprised at the people that weren’t there, than who was, and it’s amazing to realize who you can live without and who’s company makes you feel worse not better. For the most part, everything turned out exactly the way I hoped, and I can honestly say, in those six weeks I don’t feel bad about anything I chose to do.
